Marshall Wood is a Perth-based custom furniture studio founded by Jake Sawyer in 2019, born out of a desire to create bespoke pieces that stand the test of time.
As a self-taught designer and craftsman, Jake’s process is collaborative, marrying the client’s wishes with professional design experience and attention to detail. Jake works with clients throughout each piece’s entire journey, covering consultation, design, material sourcing, construction, finishing and delivery.
Jake uses responsibly sourced local and imported timber and has created pieces for clients across Australia and internationally.

Sum explores the meeting of two contrasting materials and woodworking techniques. A reclaimed jarrah base, built with solid timber joinery, brings strength and durability. Set within its frame, a veneered Karelian birch top showcases the full range of beauty found in timber, from plain, straight-grained jarrah to highly figured burl.
The form is deliberately simple, allowing the materials to take centre stage. Precise machining and hand-sanding give the piece its quiet refinement. The cross-shaped leg is a (not-so) subtle nod to the title, and to the maker’s former life as an accountant.
