In light of the recent Western Australian native logging ban and growing global sustainability concerns, this work asks whether a tree’s waste products might be utilised as a furniture-making material rather than harvesting the tree itself.
This innovative technique, which laminates turned Banksia seed pods, forms the basis of Towards a New Vernacular, a collection of furniture designed and produced in Perth by Mark Lilly. The collection employs a simple clover-petal motif, drawn from traditional woodcarving, to highlight the junction between Banksia and timber, while subtly referencing the Banksia’s distinctive floral form.
