Dutch-born visual artist Liesbeth Goedhart has called Fremantle home for 32 years. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Curtin University (2004). After running her arts consultancy business for many years, Liesbeth returned to her own studio practice at The Naval Store in 2025 with a focus on mixed media painting and wall objects made from salvaged materials.
Liesbeth spent the past year working exclusively with graphite—a self-imposed restriction born not from limitation but from conviction. “I see it as a world in itself. Something that far transcends the role of a mere mark-making tool. It is, in fact, my subject.”
Graphite is a form of carbon—the literal building block of life on Earth, the stuff stars and human bodies are made of. She mixes graphite powder with water or acrylic medium, and from there it migrates onto canvas, ply, paper or discarded cardboard and Styrofoam packaging.
Gravitating to the three-dimensional, her pieces sit between painting and wall object. A painstaking process of slow burnishing gives the graphite a mysterious shine reminiscent of moonlight on water.
Liesbeth is looking forward to further researching graphite during a residency at the Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre in 2027.
