Jess Miller

Jess Miller

Jess Miller (British, b. 1989) is an oil painter based in Perth, Western Australia.

Her practice centres on romanticising the everyday, drawing attention to familiar objects, fleeting observations and moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed. Borrowing from the richness and theatricality of historical painting, Miller brings a contemporary sensibility to ordinary subjects, finding beauty, humour and ambiguity in the seemingly mundane.

Working through layers of colour, shifting tones and carefully considered edges, she explores the material qualities of oil paint as much as the subjects it represents. Her paintings move between observation and intuition, allowing familiar scenes to take on an unexpected sense of significance.

Recent work reflects a growing attention to the natural environment immediately surrounding her, extending her interest in domestic life to the flora, fauna and quiet rhythms of the Australian landscape.

This work emerged from a growing attention to the landscape immediately surrounding me. Bronzewings move quietly through the garden, their low calls mixing with frogs, birds and the rustle of trees. Native foliage and seasonal fruit belong to this same lived environment.

Borrowing from the richness and ceremony of historical still-life painting, I wanted to give these familiar, often overlooked subjects a heightened presence.

The work reflects a shift in my practice while continuing an interest in romanticising the everyday, allowing ordinary things, closely observed, to become tender and unexpectedly significant.
