Jake von Oertzen

I am Jake Von Oertzen, a third-year Interior Architecture student at Curtin University and a furniture maker at Remington Matters. I am a passionate designer and maker, directly inspired by my surroundings, the natural environment and found form.

My primary skillset is in metalwork, but through my furniture-making practice I am also exploring textiles, woodwork and stonework. I have a particular fascination with lighting objects as furniture, the way they interact with a space both lit and unlit, and their ability to transform a space instantly.

This table lamp is a two-sided box light that illuminates figured stone with LED downlighting from both the front and back. It can be viewed from either side, revealing the outer layer of the rock as well as the beautifully figured stone within.

This lamp is not designed to light a room, but rather to cast a soft glow across the stone, almost like an artwork displayed in a gallery.
