Isabelle de Kleine (b. 1994) explores the romanticisation and degenerative nature of memory, as well as the interweaving of natural and digital experiences, through her paintings.
Shaped by months spent travelling alone through the northern regions of Australia, her works are created through a lengthy process of manipulation that mirrors the alterations the subconscious undergoes in the act of remembering. Areas of blur, artefact and unfocused detail reference the parts of memory that slip, warp and reform. This also suggests the artifice implicit in the digitalisation of the natural environment.
Through this process of abstraction, the landscape is stripped of its representational qualities, leaving only impressions of the land: feeling, light and colour.
Isabelle completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at RMIT in 2016 and has since presented numerous solo exhibitions (2021, 2023 and 2025), participated in group exhibitions, and exhibited at Sydney Contemporary (2019, 2020 and 2023). She was awarded the Digital Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery (2015), The Arkley Prize at the NotFair Art Fair (2016), and the Tolarno Hotel Prize (2015).
Her work has been featured on ABC News, profiled in publications including The Sydney Morning Herald, Beautiful Bizarre Magazine and Hunter & Folk, and archived as part of The Lunar Codex Project (2026).
