Brendan Ryan’s love of paint evolved from restoring antique furniture, where he discovered the many layers of paint applied to objects over time. His art practice developed alongside a career as a decorative artist in the bar and restaurant scene.
His abstract expressionist practice began with accidental works on job sites. Taking note of paint spills and marks left on surfaces as he worked, he developed ‘dropsheetism’. Repurposed surfaces and canvas sheets are laid out in the hope of catching spills of paint or coffee before returning to the studio, where the journey with a loaded brush begins.
Patterns form figures and reveal themselves as he adds to or subtracts from the random marks left by bootprints, extinguished cigarettes and anything else that makes its way onto his boards.
