Mikey, AKA Uncle, is converting The Lieutenants Mess into a conversation pit – an open space to see his work, talk about his practice and chat about home lighting aspirations, and how cinematography can inform those decisions. Visitors are welcome to bring a light or glass fixture they’ve never figured out how to make work.

Uncle Cupboard
For the last 20 years, Mikey has worked as a director and cinematographer across feature film, documentaries, music videos, TV commercials and arts documentation. While renovating a 1950s Jarrah cottage on the outskirts of Fremantle, a lifelong curiosity for woodwork, vintage fixtures and architectural salvage came to a head, sparking the creation of Uncle Cupboard – light sculpture built from salvaged materials, glass and Australian hardwoods. Cinematography taught him that lighting isn’t just utilitarian – manipulating light and shadow shapes the mood of a space.
