SHOP HAUS

with Rosslyn de Souza and Spacemarket

Could Fremantle’s vacant commercial spaces be transformed into dynamic places to live and work?

SHOP HAUS wants to find out!

Ros de Souza of Street Gallery has joined forces with Spacemarket to rework a long-vacant commercial unit at the Fremantle Malls into a versatile 79m2 studio full of possibility.

Visit to see how the space has been reimagined with assistance from Bauwerk Colour, Pastelia Vintage and Soko Home, and contributions from local artists Ian de Souza, Anya Brock, Jay Staples & Stephen Brameld

SHOP HAUS aims to open up a conversation about how our City might look and feel if we rethink how we use it. With people living and working in some of our forgotten pockets, there would be lights on, music, food and activity. It would create safer streets, more available central housing, a more connected community, and encourage greater responsibility for the commons.

If you’re a planner, architect, designer, property owner, local resident, or just curious, please drop by! Help us tease out what needs to change to fill the challenged spaces in our City with life. We look forward to welcoming you and hearing your ideas.

Special thanks to John Alberti Real Estate.

Rosslyn de Souza is an independent contractor in arts-led place making. A long time Fremantle resident, she uses art and creativity to transform spaces and communities. The Street Gallery Concept and the recent Woodsons Arcade “Outside the Box” gallery project demonstrate Ros’s ability to re-imagine and revitalise urban spaces while providing invaluable opportunities for emerging and career artists. A huge fan of Spacemarket and Design Freo, the potential for SHOP HAUS style living is a project close to Ros and Sarah’s vision for inner city Fremantle.

Spacemarket is a Fremantle-based urban renewal organisation that looks to realise value in underutilised spaces. Led by architect Joel Benichou and community development expert Sarah Booth, Spacemarket explores opportunities to creatively fill cities with life. SHOP HAUS has been conceived to provoke thought as to what needs to shift to make ideas like this possible.
