Kissa Listening Bar
Kissa is a Japanese word for cafe or tea house, and it has come to mean a listening bar: a small room built around the simple pleasure of hearing music properly. This new pop-up project brings that idea to life, and you’re invited to sit inside it.
At its heart is a sound system made entirely by hand by Henning Meeves and Dale Woodley. A pure Class A, 4 channel valve amplifier drives a pair of timber horn speakers, each with 15 multicellular elements, paired with 15″ reflex tuned bass cabinets. The listening room itself, furniture included, was designed and built around the system, so every detail serves the music.
In this hour-long session, the creators of Kissa will be on site to talk about the concept and where the project began, and how the amplifier, speakers and furniture were designed and made. There’s time for questions and conversation, and then the best part: live demonstrations of the system with music and sound, with tea and drinks on offer while you listen.
Whether you love design, craft, audio or simply a good cup of tea in a beautiful room, come along and hear what all the care and making sounds like.

Kissa Fremantle
Kissa Fremantle is a team of architects, designers, furniture makers, music producers and a filmmaker: Joseph London, Dimitri Kapetas, Henning Meeves and Dale Woodley. They came together in March this year to discuss a desire to make an incredible sound system and a venue for its enjoyment, and by August, Kissa opened in the Fremantle piazza. In this short time, an extremely steep learning curve was faced by the makers of the sound system in particular but, despite an incredibly tight budget and time frame, flexibility, collaboration and a fair bit of luck contributed to the satisfying outcome.
