From the Surface: Country, Culture, Connection

with Camera Story

From the Surface brings together works by two Western Australian First Nations artists, Mary-Lou Orliyarli Divilli and Nuriah Jadai. Working across photography, painting and design, both artists showcase the places, people and stories that shape who they are.

For each artist, Country is not just a backdrop but a living presence, carrying memory, knowledge and belonging. Their work looks beyond the surface to what lies beneath – culture held in the land, connections passed down through family, and the responsibility of caring for Country.

Mary-Lou and Nuriah approach their practice with rawness and intimacy, and this showcase offers a window into two distinct practices united by a shared truth: identity grounded in Country, culture and connection, told by the women who live them.
